I think the main priority for this is finding the right brush to use. Also i like the idea of keeping mario mouthless cause like funny mustache.

I think i understand the Nintendo artstyle. I drew the first one with just a refrence and the second using guidelines. I'm getting very comfortable with this, maybe next time I'll work on a mareach thing.

I practiced the super princess peach artstyle, it was surprisingly fast but imagine if i used guidelines. Maybe there's a tutorial somewhere but still not bad for a first attempt.
