Mortasheen sketches: feedback wanted!

Inspired by a Halloween decoration, I've had ideas since last year for a psychic monster whose head zippers open and kind of invokes an owl, without actually being a bird. I can't settle on a final look, so your input is appreciated!

Babyz

Early on I kept trying to design the baby from Awful Hospital before deciding I didn't need to directly show it. I really can't make a baby look very cute. The bottom ones kind of borrow from Hideshi Hino

Fectoid sketches

I have hundreds of ideas the Fectoids went through, but here's some that actually evolved into final versions, and one that didn't change at all.

Mortasheen - Cognosticator

The first monthly monster, distinct from Patron-suggested monsters. Inspired a bit by The Shadow Out of Time, but I also wanted it to invoke a television and a phonograph without quite looking like either one. Also like some sort of little old person with an ear horn.

Nepenthes monster

Hisham Hasan's preferred request was to base a monster on Nepenthes, something I've kept putting off for years. This one attacks with its pheromones, which are lightly inspired by Junji Ito's DEATH STENCH. Colors based on real species!

"Sandworm Otter"

$30+ patrons can suggest one rough concept for me to make into a Mortasheen monster, and this is the first near-finished one. Clownmonster's suggestions included "a cross between and otter and a sandworm" and they liked my sketch of that the most out of several possibilities. I originally said I'd do these requests as pencil sketches but uh...I think I'm just gonna be coloring them like my usual...

YOU

Here's a page of sketches from really, really, really early in Awful Hospital development, like in April, when I didn't even know if I'd start it up at all and it was just one of those many "what-if" concepts. So these were just some meandering "generic protagonist" doodles for a "possible" comment-driven horror comic.

Egghead and Brainflies

I never did share this; these doodles in a pocket-sized notebook are the exact origin of the eggheads and brainflies from burgrr, and pretty much still their official designs.

More hospital monster concepts

More early stuff, some of which you've already seen finalized. There's also a tree man, a walking sphincter, and an X-ray monster

Polyps, warts and barnacles

For ages I've had ideas for various monsters consisting of barnacle or coral-like warts, tumors and polyps, which would grow like "gardens" or take over bodies. Some special monsters could conceivably also utilize them as appendages. The recent "Terrortoma" resulted from these but I still keep turning over more creatures along the same lines. It's hard to settle on them and avoid too much overlap...

Beasts

Some sketches from some time ago of a slightly redesigned Malodorodon and heavily redesigned Catoplagas. I like the former and will probably ink and color it someday, but maybe I over-designed the Catoplagas concept. I dunno about the head. I plan on changing its power to swarms of lice instead of swarms of fleas, but only because there wound up being a better flea swarm monster (Mongrunge)

The first of two for the month!

Wow!

Thanks to you guys we'll already be able to eat a lot healthier and make rent a little easier this month. I'm still visiting in Maryland, working on a possible special Halloween series of Mortasheen monsters, some upcoming Awful Hospital content and loads of articles. I'll have Dr. Phage's files and a bunch of new sketches up over the next couple of weeks, and of course the rewards I owe people ...

Nocturtle

A concept I've been kicking around for updating the vampire type, Nocturtle. Its current version, with a shell made of giant barnacles, just feels a little redundant with some other monsters. But what if its shell were like a cave? And it was filled with tiny symbiotic mutant vampire bats? Spookier, vampire-ier, and not something I've seen done in a turtle monster before.

Dessicrypt

Here's another one that's gone through different designs for ages. Years, in fact. It's modeled after a mosquito pupa, but its concept is a huge, desert-loving serpentine being which turns victims into obedient, withered mummies. It just doesn't feel complete yet, not quite Mortasheen enough. I'll keep at it, probably.

Streptile!

I promised to share un-made/upcoming Mortasheen monsters with $10 and up patrons, so here's one that's been in my "to-do" pile (which is huge) for months. "Streptile" would tie in with...another idea I've been considering.

Abyss things

These were the only sketches I did before the abyssal scene, which I wound up drawing totally freehand anyway, making up a lot of them on the spot instead of following any sketch ideas. The Abyss exists "between" the zones, even though the zones aren't physical places and therefore there really isn't anything between them the way we understand that concept.
