September Dormitory Diary Entry - Ura Takazumi

Hey, long time no see! It’s Ura.

Here’s my dorm diary update for September.

Sorry for going radio silent on these updates for a while. I figured now would be a good time to fill you in on what’s been happening lately.

So, I’ve been pretty swamped with our in-house projects lately and haven’t had much chance to work on anything from other studios. I used to bounce around between a ton of different projects, and while I miss that variety a little, it was awesome getting to check out so many different keyframes. Back in late April, I even got to do some in-betweens for Yutaka Nakamura's key animation! His roughs were pretty loose, so picking out the lines was a bit of a challenge, but man, the energy in those shots was insane. Totally worth the extra effort.

Since the end of May, I’ve been dipping my toes into second key animation, and now I’m juggling that along with motion checks. Honestly, I’m having way more fun with second key than with in-betweens. You don’t have to grind through as many drawings, and I love thinking about the movement as I go—it keeps things from feeling repetitive. I haven’t had the chance to work on full-key animation yet, but I’m betting it’ll be even more of a blast when I do.

I even got to handle the motion check for a full episode once (though I had some help). But man, we were so strapped for time that I didn’t get to dive into much of the post-check clean-up or timing adjustments. Still, I’ve heard that when I take on the next episode, I might get swamped with stuff that needs a ton of corrections... so yeah, that’s kinda terrifying!

Right now, my main gigs are motion checks and second key work, but I’ve also had the chance to work on a few official licensed illustrations. That kinda stuff is usually reserved for animation supervisors and higher-ups, so it felt pretty awesome to get the opportunity. It’s not out in the wild yet, but one of the illustrations is supposed to be published in a magazine, and I’m really stoked about that!

Work aside, I recently went to see Look Back in theaters. I didn’t have super high expectations going in, but wow, it totally blew me away! It’s a story about a manga artist, so as someone who draws, there were so many relatable moments, and the amount of love and effort that went into making the movie was obvious. The skipping scene? Absolute perfection. I found out later on a podcast that Oshiyama-san personally animated that part. Seriously, what a legend.

This month, I’ve got plans to see Your Color, and I’m really looking forward to it.
