Great reaction to this great show. Toranaga was simply put a monster. As you say the show forces you to give him the benefit of the doubt, but watching the series again, puts all his interactions in a new light. Especially two interactions i find now especially egregious, both with Mariko. One was the one you mention when he "reveals" to her that this was what her father wanted for her. And the other is when he confronts her about her relationship with Blackthorn and he basically forces her to chose between her loyalty to him or to Blackthorn. Knowing what we know now, that second one is such a slimy underhanded move, that i can't help but call the guy a monster. He was counting on the constant death wish that Mariko had as he planned to use it to his advantage. The moment he noticed that she might be getting some hope or happiness in her life, he immediately goes to squash it by reminding her of her loyalty and duties to him. Such a slimy manipulative move. Also Ochiba was the one who had him figured out from the beginning. She knew about Toranaga's scheming. She knew that Toranaga whispered in Mariko's ear and it was him that convinced Lord Akechi to move against Ochiba's father. That is why she hated him, as she feared for her son's life. The only reason sh switches at the end, was Mariko's death. She blamed it on Ishido. But i also believe she kinda started to realize that this man (Toranaga) will be the victor here and she chose to be with the victor's side. I was certain that Toranaga (much like Luthen) would be at the top of your all time favorite list. Monster of a person but a F#$ing fascinating character. PS- When will you be watching Andor season 2?

2025-05-12 07:31:45 +0000 UTCThe series won 18 Emmys (including 3 acting awards and best series), 4 Golden Globes and about 70 other awards... A second season has been announced. But personally I don't really want that. One of the main reasons why this show was so good is because it's based on the novel "Shōgun" by James Clavell, which is a brilliant(!) book. I urge everyone to read it. But the story is done. I have a bad feeling about a season 2 because it would have to be completely original. And the source material for season 1 was so strong. Game of thrones was ruined when the writers ran out of books to adapt and they had to come up with their own stuff. I don't think it's a good idea. I recommend reading the book instead.
